Application of Transfer Credits to General Education

Stony Brook’s general education curriculum (the Diversified Education Curriculum-D.E.C. and Stony Brook Curriculum-SBC), is outlined in the section on Graduation Requirements. Transferred courses must carry at least 3 semester hours of credit to be applicable to any D.E.C. category or Entry Skill or SBC category.

College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, School of Journalism

1. All D.E.C. categories, Entry Skills or SBC learning objectives may be met either through a specified examination, through courses taken at Stony Brook, or through transfer of equivalent courses, unless specified otherwise. Satisfaction of these requirements will be evaluated at the time of matriculation.

2. All students may satisfy D.E.C. categories and SBC learning objectives by transferring from regionally accredited colleges and universities coursework that meets the criteria of the category. Survey and introductory courses will not satisfy D.E.C. categories I, J, and K or SBC learning objectives STEM+, SBS+, HFA+, or EXP+.

3. D.E.C. categories I and J may also be satisfied by transfer of six credits of college-level study abroad (with no more than 3 credits in an elementary foreign language) in a geographic area appropriate to the category. SBC learning objectives GLO and SBC learning objective EXP+ may be satisfied by transfer of six credits of approved college-level study abroad.

4. A course evaluated to be equivalent to a Stony Brook course will satisfy the D.E.C. or SBC learning objective of the Stony Brook course.

Note: Students may transfer credits to satisfy the D.E.C. category A or SBC learning objective WRT only with approved courses completed prior to matriculation at Stony Brook. Course work taken at institutions other than Stony Brook after matriculation will not apply to DEC A or SBC WRT.

(see link for more information) Skill and D.E.C. requirements, and SBC learning outcomes may be satisfied by transfer as noted above. The following two charts detail typical equivalent Stony Brook categories for courses or credits transferred to Stony Brook from another SUNY institution completed with a grade of C or higher, with some exceptions. These charts do not indicate exact equivalencies between the DEC and SBC and are subject to Stony Brook transfer policies.  SUNY allows campuses to have requirements that exceed the SUNY GER.
