New Latino Film Festival October 12

New Latino Cinema: Fact, Fiction and the Imagination, a mini film festival featuring emergent films from Latino directors, will be held on Saturday, October 12, from 4 pm to 9 pm at the Charles B. Wang Center Theatre. The event — presented by Stony Brook University’s Hispanic Heritage Month Committee, International Academic Programs and University Advancement along with Cinema Tropical, the leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the U.S. — is free and all are welcome to attend.

The evening will include six short films, followed by a panel discussion, a wine tasting and tapas reception with live Latin jazz, and conclude with a premier short and the feature film, The Fantastic World of Juan Orol. This historical/fictional comedy is a pitch-perfect tribute to Mexico’s B-movie master Juan Orol.

Madeline del Toro Cherney, an adjunct faculty with International Academic Programs is the festival’s director and will serve as moderator for the panel discussion, which includes participants Adrián Pérez-Melgosa, assistant professor in the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures, and Carlos A. Gutiérrez, director of Cinema Tropical.

“I welcome everyone to attend New Latino Cinema, a celebration of independent and experimental films by innovative Latino directors from around the world,” said del Toro Cherney. “The theme of the film selections, ‘Fact, Fiction and the Imagination,’ is aimed at showcasing films that transcend convention through the use of a cinematic artistic vision.”
