Cluster Hire Initiative Results in 25 New Interdisciplinary Faculty

Stony Brook University has completed its second call for proposals as part of the Interdisciplinary Faculty Cluster Hiring Initiative, which was established by President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. and Provost Dennis N. Assanis in 2012. The initiative is part of the University’s SUNY 2020 plan to hire more than 250 faculty members during a five-year period.

Sixteen senior faculty members from across campus were on the 2013 Interdisciplinary Cluster Proposal Review Committee. The group used specific criteria to evaluate 18 highly competitive interdisciplinary cluster proposals received this year.

Following an intensive committee review and consultation with the President, Provost, and other senior administrators, five proposals have been chosen for this second round of the initiative, which will result in the hiring of 25 faculty members in the areas of:

Big Data for the Social Sciences

Center for Finance

Clinical Affective Neuroscience of Anxiety and Depression

Genomics

National Security Institute

“I am very grateful to all faculty members who embraced this initiative for their innovative ideas and considerable efforts,” said Provost Assanis. “It is evident that the call for proposals has served as a catalyst for new ideas and has led to the formation of new intellectual directions and alliances.

“President Stanley and I look forward to the contributions these new interdisciplinary cluster hires will make in expanding Stony Brook University’s teaching and research in emerging fields of study that cut across traditional boundaries of academic disciplines.”

As stated by Provost Assanis, the overall goal of the Cluster Hiring Initiative is to strategically place the University on the emerging frontiers of research and knowledge and to enhance Stony Brook’s ability to shape new fields of discovery, learning and engagement.
