On April 25 Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, received a “Workday Welcome” from a group of National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) students. Since recognition is one of the NRHH’s core values, the group initiated these welcomes to acknowledge University faculty, staff and administrators that go above and beyond their job description.
“This month we nominated President Stanley for a Workday Welcome because he has gone to great lengths to ensure that Stony Brook is moving in the right direction and that the value of our education is continually increasing,” said NRHH President Jason Hyatt. “It is amazing what he does on a daily basis, and we believe that he doesn’t hear ‘thank you’ enough from students, so this was our opportunity to make it happen.”
The NRHH facilitates Workday Welcomes on a monthly basis. The group chooses the person they want to recognize, then they go into that person’s office before he or she arrives. The students bring baked goods and other crafts to give to that individual and to specially thank him or her.
“The Workday Welcome for President Stanley has been my favorite one this year,” said NRHH Recognition Coordinator Alexa Goldstein. “While it involved many weeks of planning, the President’s wonderful staff helped make our dream of doing this into a reality. The surprise on President Stanley’s face as he greeted our members made it clear that our mission was a success to help him recognize that students appreciate his contribution.”
President Stanley was very surprised and appreciative,” added Hyatt. “He took the time to meet each and every person that came to surprise him to learn each student’s story.”
