Patients at Stony Brook Children’s will have a new, plush friend to cuddle with this fall. Nearly 25 teddy bears will take the plunge and soar over Eastern Long Island to provide children in the hospital with the support, courage and hope that they need during a daunting time in their lives.
The bears will begin their journey strapped onto a skydiver’s body and free fall 13,500 feet to the ground. These brave bears are all a part of a national project called “Canopies for Kids,” and after their incredible adventure, they are delivered to the arms of a sick child at Stony Brook Children’s. The project also donates funds to Stony Brook Children’s for each bear that jumps.
This Saturday, expert skydivers will dress up as superheroes for the jump; they use this experience to position the bears as “The Bravest Teddy Bears in the World.” The hope is that these special bears will provide kids with the courage they need in the fight ahead. Each bear comes with a card containing a personalized message from the skydiver.
