STONY BROOK, NY, November 6, 2014 – Stony Brook University President, Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, a nationally prominent expert in infectious diseases, and his wife Dr. Ellen Li, a renowned gastroenterologist and research scientist at Stony Brook Medicine, announced they are making a $50,000 donation to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital in honor of Dr. Li’s parents, Mary and Henry Li. An anonymous donor has matched the gift, bringing the total impact to $100,000.

The contribution is going toward the new Stony Brook Children’s Hospital facility, a 10-story pavilion scheduled to open in 2016. A pod of six patient rooms in the existing neonatal intensive care unit of Children’s Hospital has been named “In Tribute of Mary and Henry Li.”

“Ellen and I know that nothing is more important than the health and welfare of children,” Dr. Stanley said. “As Suffolk County’s only children’s hospital and academic medical center, Stony Brook Children’s already delivers the most advanced pediatric care in the region.

“The new Children’s Hospital will allow us to expand our reach and commitment to provide sophisticated, quality care to the community’s youngest patients, and we are happy to be able to contribute in this way,” he added.

Dr. Li echoed these sentiments, noting that Children’s Hospital is an academic medical institution actively engaged in important research.

“We offer families access to groundbreaking and lifesaving clinical trials for their children,” said Dr. Li, chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “Connecting my parents’ legacy to such an important and vital institution is a tremendous honor.”

Previously, Drs. Stanley and Li made a $125,000 donation in 2012 to establish the Ellen Li and Samuel L. Stanley Jr. Endowed Scholarship at Stony Brook Medicine. The donation was matched by the Simons Foundation, increasing the total value of the scholarship to $250,000.

The expanded Stony Brook Children's Hospital will feature a newly built pediatric intensive care unit, adolescent unit, procedure suite, hematology/oncology unit, medical/surgical units and modern patient and family amenities.
