Advancing Research to Fight GI Cancer, Lyme Disease and Pediatric Health Disparities
Three Stony Brook faculty lead projects supported by SUNY Health Network of Excellence Awards

Jorge Benach, PhD, will lead a SUNY project to study the chronic outcomes of Lyme disease. 

Stony Brook, NY – July 7, 2015 – Three Stony Brook University School of Medicine faculty have received SUNY Health Network of Excellence awards to further clinical investigation of critical areas in medicine affecting populations nationally and globally. The grants total $450,000, and each award is for one-year and $150,000, effective July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016.

Ellen Li, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine, is the Principal Investigator of a project between Stony Brook University, SUNY Downstate and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories, to study the racial and ethnic differences in the gastrointestinal cancer biology. Jorge Benach, PhD, Distinguished Professor, Chair of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, and Director, Center for Infectious Diseases, and an internationally recognized researcher on the cause of Lyme disease heads a project to conduct a comprehensive study of the chronic outcomes of Lyme disease. Susmita Pati, MD, MPH, a nationally recognized population health outcomes researcher, Associate Professor, and Chief of the Division of Primary Care Pediatrics at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, is the Principal Investigator of an initiative across five SUNY campuses to improve primary care delivery and reduce health disparities for children at high risk of poor health outcomes by leveraging “big data.”

The SUNY Health Network of Excellence assembles scientists, scholars and external partners from SUNY campuses to conduct collaborative research in high demand areas. The network is one of six SUNY Networks of Excellence.
