STONY BROOK, NY, June 17, 2015 – Stony Brook University has been named the #5 most valuable public college and university by Consumers Digest, a magazine committed to providing practical advice, factual evaluations and specific recommendations that lead consumers to exceptional values in today's complex marketplace. The rankings are based on attributes that validate or define the institution’s academic prowess factored against annual cost of tuition, fees, and room and board. Stony Brook is among 100 colleges and universities, out of some 2,000 U.S. schools, that have been identified.
"Access to excellence is at the core of Stony Brook University's mission, so being recognized by Consumers Digest is a gratifying external validation," said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D. “We remain focused on increasing the value of a Stony Brook degree through recruitment and retention of world class faculty, providing robust research opportunities, and a vibrant student life.”
The goal in ranking the colleges was to give parents and students a resource showing them the value of their various options, Consumers Digest publisher Randy Weber said in a statement. "Our analysis is designed to help families make an informed decision that puts their hard-earned money to the best use," he added.
The rankings, published in Consumers Digest’s June issue, were derived from a formula that blends the academic excellence of first-time freshmen at a school (standardized test scores, high-school rank, grade-point average) with the institution's educational quality (4- and 6-year graduation rates, student-retention rate, percentage of faculty holding a PhD.) That "value index" score was factored with the cost of attending each school to determine which schools offered the most academic value per dollar.
This recognition is the latest in outstanding rankings conferred upon Stony Brook University. Most recently, Stony Brook was ranked #32 out of 484 four-year public institutions by The Business Journals; and ranked the #38 top four-year public college and university in the U.S. News & World Report “Top Public Schools Rankings” for 2015. It has also been named as one of the best value universities by The Princeton Review and named the 35th best value in public colleges for in-state students (29th for out-of-state students) by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. The University also received a ranking of 114th in the Times Higher Education 2011-2012 Top 400 World University rankings; received 23 Citations in the U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Graduate Schools” report for 2012.
