STONY BROOK, NY, AUGUST 20, 2014 – Stony Brook University Hospital held a recognition luncheon on July 30 at the Hilton Garden Inn where all hospital volunteers were acknowledged for the countless hours they donate to the hospital.  Many volunteers received awards for reaching service milestones ranging from 100 to 15,000 hours of service.

Justin Soriano was awarded with the honor of Junior Volunteer of the year.  Soriano began his service in 2013 and has donated over 100 hours of service.  Though Soriano has been a volunteer for just a little over a year, he has made quite an impression on the transport services staff.  His assignment consists of clearing patient care areas of extra beds, wheelchairs and pumps.  He also makes delivers of equipment house-wide.  In addition to his regular duties, Soriano is a lead volunteer in transport and assists with the training of new volunteers.

His supervisor, Transport Manager John Marco Manzella describes Soriano as “an extremely positive young man who has excellent communication skills and a pleasant attitude.”

“Justin demonstrates a strong ability to multitask and he takes initiative by seeking out work when he is finished with an assignment,” said Manzella.  “Justin also has a wonderful working relationship with his peers and colleagues.”

James Lundgren was awarded with the honor of Senior Volunteer of the Year. Lundgren began his volunteer service in 2012 and has donated 800 hours of volunteer service to patients receiving treatment on the 13 North Neurology Unit.

Lundgren was recommended for the award via a 5 page letter that was submitted by Denise Heeren, BSN, RN, CNRN, Day Clinician at Stony Brook University Hospital, and was endorsed by the entire 13 North staff.

The recommendation gave countless examples of Lundgren’s outstanding service and described how he has “made a positive impact on patient satisfaction.”

“The 13 North staff portrayed James as a conscientious, thoughtful, compassionate, dedicated, and respectful individual that sets an example for all of us to live by,” said Heeren.
